The Photo Solstice – There and Back Again exhibits a fluid movement between departure and return, incorporating elements of a journey influenced by sea routes, island silhouettes, and the warm breath of the Mediterranean. Dimitri Angelini's photographs are characterised by a series of impressions, including sun-bleached facades, quiet harbors, dusty roads, and the salt-laden air that clings to skin and memory. Each image evokes a sense of respite, akin to an interlude in the protracted choreography of travel: the moment preceding the docking of the ferry, the stillness of an afternoon street, the gradual dissolution of a sunset into the horizon. The grid thus becomes a representation of sensory experiences rather than geographical locations, a method of tracing the manner in which light undergoes shifts, the manner in which colours become less pronounced, and the manner in which the world appears to slow down when one listens to it with great attentiveness.
This series is not intended as a document, but rather as a reverie. The piece exhibits a synchrony with the undulations of waves and the warmth of the southern sun, thereby encapsulating the nuanced transformations that ensue when the body and the gaze submit to the influence of a landscape. In these photographs, the Mediterranean is not merely a backdrop, but rather a palpable presence, its scents, winds and timeless quality imbued within the images.
This phenomenon can be conceptualised as a dualistic journey, both outward and inward. The journey is characterised by its circular nature, with the sea serving as both a companion and a witness.
